It’s not a hybrid! Apparently the unusual look of this radish is causing a ruckus at many farmers markets! People have been known to confront or insult farmers for selling them. When in fact, the Watermelon Radish (aka the Roseheart, Continental Fancy, Redmeat, Beauty Heart, Shinrimei, Misato, Chinese Radish, or Xin Li Mei) is an heirloom. It is a variety of daikon radish that has been around since the days of Moses. Native to China, it spread to the Mediterranean area before Greek times and to the New World in the early 16th century. This is the ideal time of year to plant them too.
